The motion for “European Region of the Year” was proposed in 2001.
Countries which support this initiative are: Austria, Albania, Belgium, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Litvania, Moldova, Holland, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Russia, Serbia and Montenegro, Slovakia, Spain, Switzerland, Ukraine and Great Britain.
“European Region of the Year” has been supported by 96 regions of Europe from 29 different countries.
The Organisation is also supported by the Council of Europe.
Every region from 45 member states of the Council of Europe has a right to participate in nomination for the region of the year.



The aim of this “European Region of the Year” campaign is creating a knowledge base about the work at the regional level in Europe and new contribution in construction of Europe and integration.


EUROPEAN REGION OF THE YEAR


- according to the rules of this Organisation,
this prestigious award is given every year to two European regions -

- 2003 -
region of Balearic Islands (Spain) and Carelia (Russian Federation)



- 2005 -
Kiev, Ukraine and Piemont , Italy

- 2006 -
AP Vojvodina, Serbia and Montenegro
and canton of Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina
The jury members are internationally renowned and esteemed people. When there was an election of the European Region for 2003, some of the members of the jury were: Albert Bor, President of the European Union Regions Committee; Leone Rizo, member of the Committee for Regional Policy at the European Parliament; Risto Koivisto, President of the Congress of Local Regional Governments of Europe, at that time…
Romano Prodi, President of the European Committee, at that time (2002), found this Organisation to be “an example of support and encouragement to regions to participate in construction of the European Union region.”
